Artist / Poon Yuen Leung

潘源良

Calvin Poon Yuen Leung, born in 1958 in Hong Kong, is a renowned lyricist, screenwriter, director, and football commentator.

 

In the Hong Kong music scene, Poon is a pivotal figure. Since the 1980s, he has written over a thousand Cantopop lyrics for numerous singers, including Alan Tam, Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui, George Lam, Jacky Cheung, Tat Ming Pair, and Sandy Lam. His works span a variety of styles, covering themes such as personal growth, love, and social issues. Notable pieces include "Love Trap"《愛情陷阱》, "Who is the Most Beloved"《最愛是誰》, "A Woman Easily Hurt"《容易受傷的女人》, "Hold Tight to the Present"《抱緊眼前人》, "With Love"《憑着愛》, "Two Hearts Flower"《兩心花》and "Aftershock"《餘震》. Starting in 2015, Poon began using the pen name "Yeun Leung Pun" for his lyrics, and for the first time, he wrote all the lyrics for Eason Chan's Cantonese album "Getting Ready"《準備中》. That same year, he held a two-night concert titled "Who is the Most Beloved Poon Yuen Leung?" 「最愛潘源良是誰作品展」at the Hong Kong Coliseum, which became a major talking point in the city.

 

Poon Yuen Leung has been recognised multiple times by the industry, including winning the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Original Film Song four times (1986, 1987, 1990, 2012). In 2019, he was awarded the "CASH Hall of Fame Award" by the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong (CASH), the highest honour, in recognition of his significant contributions to the Hong Kong music scene.

 

Beyond lyric writing, Poon is also active in television and film, working as a screenwriter and director. His works include "Love in the Buff" 《戀愛季節》,"Shadow Lover" 《影子愛人》, "Fatal Visit" 《聖荷西謀殺案》and "Hi, Fidelity"《出軌的女人》, showcasing his talent in film creation.

 

Additionally, Poon is a well-known football commentator, beloved by fans for his insightful commentary on the sport.

 

In recent years, he has ventured into calligraphy. In 2016 and 2017, he held two joint exhibitions titled "Light Source 50"《光源50》with Hong Kong artist Stephen Yau at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre, where he first displayed his calligraphy works. His unique "Wandering Lyricist" calligraphy style has been warmly received by the public.
